Theme - due December 8th

Theme can be defined as the meaning, the moral, or the message about life that the writer conveys to the reader. However, as discussed in class today, themes can also be BIGGER ideas that subtly hold the story together. These themes are simple and woven into the story. They help move along the plot. They are not stated; they must be inferred.

What bigger ideas do you see holding this novel together? Where do you see these themes appearing? How do these themes further the storyline?

The theme is be couragious and brave because when Freak and Max snook out at the middle of the night to go retrieve a purse so they can go an deliver it to the owner but turns out the owner was a woman that had a husband and they were all making fun of Freak and Max and they were sort of scared but they still stood up for themselves and then they got home safely.

I think the bigger idea is friendship and bravery. Without friendship the story wouldn't be the way it is, and without bravery the story would be a lot less exciting. I think the friendship theme shows up constantly like when Max carries Freak on his shoulders all the time or when Freak stood up for Max in class when people were throwing stuff at him. The bravery theme also pops up because they went to bad part of town even though they were told not to go just to return some lady's purse. The story would be completely different and not as interesting. They give a spine to the story.

The Theme is a lot of bravery and being couragious. Because when Freak and Max were returning the purse they didn't runaway. So they were brave to return it and not run. That takes a lot of bravery not to run from your fears. But to face full on. Even though they were scared they still made it home okay. That's the theme and here is another figuative.
"She was worrying it like a dog with a bone."-simile Meaning Loretta was thinking really hard.

I think its friendship because Max and Freak are always together and they go on quests together. They always tell each other stories and Freak always rides on Max's shoulders. I think courage too because they sneak out and save a lady's purse and there really not afraid of anything.

I think friendship and loyalty take place here, because Freak always stadnsup for Max and Max always stands up for Freak. This means that they respect each other and always help each other out no matter what

In this book I've been seeing a lot of different themes, but most of all its friendship and bravery.Max and Freak I feel gain a trust in their friendship, and how Max feels comfortable at Freak's house. Bravery is in the theme of friendship to, Freak and Max are always standing up for each other, And are never letting each other down.

I think that the theme is to be brave and accepting. This is because Freak doesn't let his disabillities stop him from doing what he wants to do. It takes bravery to do this because if he were a wimp and had a pity party all day. He couldn't and wouldn't do anything. It takes bravery to be yourself and have faith in yourself.
I think that acceptance is in here too. I think this because Max doesn't really let bad names and put downs get to him. He accepts that people are going to call him names and that he is going to just have to deal with it. Plus Freak accepts that his body is not in the greatest condition and so, tries harder to do things. He accepts that he is like this and deals with it. Plus, they were really brave to take that purse back to that old lady.
who knows, she could have been a murderur. None the less of her partner. Bravery can come in all shapes and sizes.
Oh, one more thing. Another theme is be yourself. Freak has problems but...... he doesn't stop who is he and what he wants/likes to do.

Chivalry because when Freak and Max go and get the purse in the middle of the night and then take it to its rightful owner for no reason except to be a good person with no benefit to themselves.

The theme in this book is probably going to be chivalry, courage, and friendship. I chose chivalry because Freak and Max always pretend like they are in the midevil times with King Arthur and they serve as loyal knights to him. I chose courage because Max and Freak stood up against the bullies and did what was right even if it was scary. Finally I chose friendship because through all of Freak and Max's huge differences, they are inseperable friends and do almost everything together.

I think a theme could be friendship because no matter what Max is a friend to Freak even though some people are not very friendly.

I think the theme in this section is search for self because freak takes him to the lab to show max that he wants to become the first human robot. The idea i see holding the story together is that freak and max are becoming very good friends and doing new things every day. I think it brings the story line along because it gives freak and max something to do until it is finally time for them to go to school and continue there adventures. Comment by 201400500

I think that friendship and courage are the main themes in this story. Max and Freak are friends throughout the whole story even though they both face strugles in everyday life. They are really close buds even in not so good times. This story also has a theme of courage. Courage is in the whole book. Freak is always couragious when he is just being himself. An example from this book of courage is when Freak told Max to go in the water at the fireworks show he did even though he didn't know how it would turn out.

i think bravery and freinds ship takes place beacouse Freak and max go on quests that they do together wich takes freind ship for exsample, freak and max goes almost everywere together. For bravery it takes courage to sneek out at night and go to the get a purse from a drain than return it to some old couple on the side of town that is not that grate.

I would have to say the theme would be friendship because, no matter what they do they are always together and they alwayss stick up for eachother

While reading this book I see a couple of themes. I see loyalty between Freak and Max because Max just does what Freak tells him. I also see obviously frienship between Freak and Max. Courage is another theme. It takes guts to run from kids with weapons into a muddy lake with a paralyzed kid on your shoulders.

I think that the theme is friendship because when Maxwell doesn't have Freak he just sits is the down under all day and nobaody cares about him. Then when he has Freak he has sombody to care for him and is alot happier.

I think the theme is bravery friendship when they went to Loretta house was bravery and friendship was when they went to the principals office for the first time together.

This is from cheetah978

I think its friendship because Freak or Kevin has to have the patience with Maxwell. And Maxwell always has to have the patience on waiting for him. Also, they are very loyal to what they do. Also, Maxwell doesn't care what other people think of Freak, they'll be friends tell the end.

One ot the big themes like we discussed in class is courage, they snuck out, AND went into the bad neighborhood just to save a maiden's purse. Loyalty is there too, between Freak and Max mostly. Later between the one man in the neighborhood and Max's father. Despite what his fear he serves him, which may also be defined as bravery.

I think the theme of the story is friendship and courage. The friendship side is the 2 kids, max and freak are best friends that will go though anything together. The courage part is when the 2 kids go on quest together. One example is when they kids go in the middle of the night to find so called treasure.

I think that the theme is freindship and bravery. Max and Freak are always together and they always stick up for each other. And for bravery, when max and Freak are surrounded by Tony D and his gang, Freak stands up for max, they go on hunts and alot of other things too.

Freak and Max went to go and deliver a purse that they found. They were being loyal to the woman by not taking any money out of it. They were also being brave because of the risks of being out at night.

Some of the more important themes of the story are friendship because of Max and Freak being really good friends and not just forgetting each other or something and I guess that could be loyalty too, acceptance a little because of Max not caring what Freak looked like, and bravery because the two of them went out in the middle of the night (morning really) to get a purse and then return it even though they didn't know who's it was.

I think the bigger idea is no matter what you look like, or how tall you are, there is a special and loving person inside of everyone. I this theme appearing kind of towards the middle where Freak and Max just start to become bestfriends, because Max is this huge kind of dumb kid, and Freak is this really short genius. They further the storyline by saying how close they are to each other, and how they help each other from bad situations. It also puts kind of a spark to the story.

I think that there are themes of bravery, friendship, and acceptance. Both Max and Kevin must be brave when they stand up for each other. The have to be brave to go to get the purse in the middle of the night too. Max and Kevin are always together, which supports the friendship theme. They both are always there for each other in times of need. because Kevin is small and has leg braces, other kids pick on and make fun of him. Because Max is friends with Kevin people make fun of him.

Ms. Nelson,
I really like what you have done with your blog. It looks as if you have a good thing going here. I can tell that you will continue using it as many students comment each week.
I hope you have found that it meets the purpose of your goal of helping students keep the concept in mind while you move forward in class.

I think the theme is friendship and bravery because without it we wouldn't have the same storyline or the same story at all! To me when they really show it is whenever Freak talks about his illness and how he is choosing to fight to stay well and he's not just sitting htere waiting for something ot happen and that takes alot of bravery.

I think the theme in Freak The Mighty is courage. Freak has to be couragous when he thinks that he has to have the 'Robot' surgery. And Max has to be couragous when they stand up to Louretta, and Iggy.

I think loyalty because Max has helped Freak out with things. At the same time freak stands up for Max in the classroom.

I think the theme is bravery because when Max is kind of being held hostage by his dad and Loretta Lee comes to help and the house is surrounded by cops and Freak comes in with his water gun full of some acid stuff and sprays Max's dad in the eye and they run out to where the cops are.
